My first time abroad without my parents was in the Spring of 2015. I was a senior in high school and my Spanish teacher organized a spring break trip to Spain and Morocco. my friends and I went. I always like the idea of traveling and I had the opportunity to travel internationally with my parents prior but this would be the first time I would be seeing another country out of the gaze of my parents.
During the trip, we went to galleries. art galleries. In every city we went to we visited an art gallery or cultural site just to get a sense of the people and life in the country and in the city.

Which is interesting because when you go to a new country, you typically go to museums and historic sites to gauge a sense of the people, their essence, their culture, their values and what they promote. That's the function of museums, especially one given the title of "national".

So, I decided to go to the National Gallery of Art (NGA) to guage a sense of the american people based on the art that was on display.
There was no surprise in my findings, a plethora of masterfully painted landscapes and white faces. not much representation of the various people groups that built this country but more so of those who established this country.
The NGA has an east wing which houses an amazing modern art collection but the West building houses the more classical art. It's beautiful but it's interesting to see that what is classically American through the representation in the collection at the National Gallery of Art.
